Handball competition (27/06/2017) : 2017-07-21

On Tuesday 27th June we entered 3 teams into a Handball competition at Small Heath School. Our “A” and “B” teams both played well enough in the group stages and won enough of their matches to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament. Our “B” team were in a thrilling encounter against Regents Park A as it ended 4-4, with Leyla, Samir and Hamza all grabbing goals. The match went to a golden goal extra time period but unfortunately for us, Regents Park were just a shade too good and managed to get a winner early in extra time, meaning we were into the 3rd place play-off to play against the team that lost the other semi final. In that match was our “A” team and Regents Park B. Our “A” team were off to a flying start with Sala scoring in the first 15 seconds and we further extended the lead with goals through Swalaheen and Amina. Our goalkeeper, Asad, pulled off a couple of great saves but Regents Park managed to get a couple of goals back so we entered the last minute with a slender 5-4 lead. Regents Park had one last attack but thankfully for us, Asad stood up tall and tipped the ball over the bar to preserve our slender lead. The game ended not long after so we were through to the final! Before the final was the 3rd place play-off with our “B” team. It was a tight game but Samir and Hamza scored a goal each and the whole team defended brilliantly throughout. Despite Umayma making a couple of big saves in goal, Regents Park scored late on but we hung on to the lead and won 2-1, meaning our “B” team finished in 3rd place on the day! The last game of the evening was the final between Montgomery “A” and Regents Park A. They had beaten us in the very first match of the tournament so we were looking to improve against them which we did. We were off to a quick start, scoring 3 goals in the first couple of minutes but they hit back with a great team goal. Sala, Amina and Swalaheen all doubled their goal count in the game and thanks to Sidrahs defence and some more great saves from Asad, we ended up taking a very hard fought 5-1 victory! We have qualified for the local final which will take place on Monday 3rd July where we will play 3 other schools for a place in the Birmingham finals!
